Record-breaking attendance at SIR’s May 2016 Fellows Spring Practicum
On the heels of the record-breaking attendance in 2015, this year’s Fellows Spring Practicum, May 12-14 in Chicago brought over 100 fellows together, and featured hands-on workshops where exhibitors’ simulators and models help train fellows in the latest device and techniques available in interventional oncology and PAD. Pain management and practice development were also covered during the two-day course.
We are grateful for the 2016 Corporate Ambassador Program (CAP) partners who help make the Practicum possible: AngioDynamics, Argon Medical, Bard, Boston Scientific, BTG, Cook Medical, Cordis, DFINE, Inc., Endocare, Gore & Associates, Guerbet, Medtronic, McKesson, Merit Medical, Penumbra, Siemens Healthcare, Sirtex and Stryker Interventional Spine. IR Now a Specialty, 5 Year Residency Being Developed
ABMS approves dual primary certificate in interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology. Moving to a primary certificate, as opposed to a subspecialty certificate, designates interventional radiology as a unique and distinct area of medicine, rather than an area of focus within an existing specialty. Learn more on SIR's dedicated IR Residency web page.
Match Update—219 New IR Fellows-in-Training
June 19 was match day for vascular and interventional radiology fellowship programs for the 2014 appointment year. In the match, 227 fellowship positions were offered with 219 filled and 8 unfilled for a 96.5 percent fill rate. Over the last 6 years, there has been a steady increase in the ratio of applicants per position offered in the match. This may indicate a continued upswing in trainee interest in interventional radiology (there were 89 IR fellows matched in 2008).
As of this year, there are 92 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)–accredited interventional radiology fellowships. (Interventional radiology has 11 programs not participating in the match for which there is no data.)
